Today, we celebrate World Oceans Day. For everyone living, working, or simply enjoying the coast of the Northern Adriatic, this is a moment to see the sea in a new light. Not just as a picturesque backdrop for summer holidays or a source of refreshment, but as a complex, vibrant, and highly vulnerable ecosystem that we sustain, strain, and owe to protect through our daily actions.
The world's waters are interconnected, and every local challenge echoes globally. That is why true care for the global oceans begins right on our doorstep—on the piers, beaches, and coastal communities of the Northern Adriatic.
The Northern Adriatic: A Sea at the Crossroads of Change
The Northern Adriatic is unique in many ways. It is the northernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea, shallow, biologically incredibly rich, yet subject to intense pressures from human activities. Maritime transport, tourism, coastal urbanization, and climate change are all leaving noticeable marks on its health.
To preserve the sea in the long run, traditional conservation approaches operating in isolation from the community are no longer enough. Nature knows no administrative borders, and solutions cannot be found by staying locked inside offices or laboratories. We need synergy—a bridge connecting scientific findings, local policies, and the people who live by the sea every day.
It is from this very vision that the RISTANC project was born.
The RISTANC Project: Bridging Community and Science
Although RISTANC is a relatively young project—just over six months since its launch—its foundations run deep. The project’s guiding principle is simple yet powerful: from community insights to targeted solutions.
We know that the best directions are hidden within people's experiences. That is why we spent the past few months where real coastal life happens. We visited the Saltmakers' Day, the international Love your Ocean exhibition in Düsseldorf, Internautica, and the Pier of Tastes in Izola. We challenged fishers, locals, tourists, and casual visitors with one crucial question:
"In your view, what is the biggest challenge facing our sea?"
The answers we received on our cards were honest, diverse, and sometimes unsettling. They touched upon everything from plastic pollution and biodiversity loss to coastal overcrowding during the peak tourist season. These voices from the ground were not forgotten; they became the direct fuel for our experts' work.
The LEG Group in Full Swing and an Official European Commitment
To turn these collected opinions into concrete actions, our LEG (Local Engagement Group) has been working intensively behind the scenes for months. The group meets regularly, meticulously analyzing the feedback received, and drafting strategic plans for the future.
The scientific component of the RISTANC project allows us to back people's everyday observations with precise data and expert analysis, ensuring that our next steps are both deliberate and scientifically sound.
On World Oceans Day, we are proud to announce that the RISTANC project has endorsed the EU Mission Charter "Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030." With this endorsement, we have firmly committed to addressing the local challenges of the Northern Adriatic in line with European sustainability standards, becoming part of a global network fighting for cleaner waters.
The First Step: Shaping Two Demo Challenges Ahead
What does all this mean for the future? We are entering a key phase of the project. Based on the synergy between voices from the ground and scientific analysis, the LEG group will soon shape and announce two key demo challenges. This will be our first major step, where we will start designing and testing concrete, tangible solutions on the ground together with municipalities, researchers, and local communities.
Because we believe that big changes are driven by small, local initiatives, we are already laying the groundwork for a micro-granting scheme. This financial incentive will enable individuals and local organizations to actively and directly participate in solving these challenges.
Join the Mission!
World Oceans Day reminds us that the sea has no voice of its own—we are its voice. The RISTANC project is an open platform where anyone who cares about the future of the Northern Adriatic can participate.
