Mission

Sometimes it does take a village. From the scientific rigor, the creative pulse, citizen science and the ground-level influence of our four coastal municipalities, we are a transdisciplinary team dedicated to the sea's recovery.

From Local Evidence to European Impact

RISTANC is a dedicated team supporting the EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030. While the Mission sets the global targets, RISTANC focuses on the local "How." We identify the social and governance innovations that turn high-level policy into tangible reality in the Northern Adriatic.

In the Slovenian sea, we search for opportunities to restore ecosystems, reduce pollution, and establish a sustainable blue economy. We achieve this through these core actions:

  • The Demo solutions: We are developing and testing 2 concrete solutions for existing challenges in the Slovenian sea. These will serve as practical evidence for a new, responsive way of managing the water.
  • The Innovation Fund (Open Call): Through a public call, we will support 5–8 micro-projects from citizens, innovators, and artists. This is a space for your experimental actions, art-science interventions, and local initiatives.
  • A Lasting Legacy: By integrating transdisciplinarity into Master’s and PhD programs and launching ocean literacy programs for youth (ages 6–15), we ensure that this knowledge remains rooted in our community.

From this experimental action, we generate direct impacts for citizens, whom we transform into active guardians of the Adriatic through empowerment and ocean literacy. For policymakers, we deliver proven social innovation models ready for immediate integration into systemic policies. Simultaneously, we offer innovators mentorship and a direct bridge to decision-makers, while enabling researchers to push the boundaries of modern sustainability science through hands-on, transdisciplinary processes in the field.

    Partners

RISTANC brings together a diverse group of partners who share a common interest in the future of the sea. The consortium includes research and educational institutions, all four coastal municipalities of Slovenian Istria, and non-governmental organisations, supported by international partners.

Each partner contributes specific knowledge, experience and perspectives. Together, they form a cross-sectoral collaboration that reflects the complexity of marine challenges and the need for cooperation across disciplines and institutions.
